Film Listings for July 13-19
An interesting week for the local cinemas: a heartwarming Olympic tie-in, a new school-based drama with Adrien Brody, and a chance to catch up with the prequels to The Dark Knight Rises before its release on July 20.
Chariots of Fire (1981,drama, 124 mins) Everyman Maida Vale
After the play became a sensation at the Hampstead Theatre back in May, now comes the very timely restoration and rerelease of the 30-year-old film classic. The story of two British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, competing at the 1924 Olympics. Ludicrously heartwarming and guaranteed to get you in the Olympic spirit.

Detachment*
Tony Kaye (director of American History X) returns with a film focusing on a drifting schoolteacher played by Adrien Brody, who connects with teachers and students in his latest job. Support comes from Bryan Cranston, James Caan and Lucy Liu. Looks decent.

7 Days in Havana* (2012, drama, 129 mins).
This looks distinctly odd. It has seven(!) directors – including Benicio del Toro and Gaspar Noe, and has been funded entirely by the Cuban tourist board. So, in effect, it's a two hour advert for Havana. To compound it all, it has been poorly reviewed.

This film looks so out there, that it might have come all the way round and be back at the start. A young Mormon girl believes in immaculate conception and that she has been impregnated by music. A bit much if you ask me.
