Local film listings December 7-13

As I'm sure you're all aware, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released on Dec 13th (more next week). It is the first film to pioneer the higher frame rate technology of 48 fps (frames per second) but the early whispers are that it can cause nausea and headaches to people of a certain disposition. It will be available in 2D and 3D as well as IMAX and the aforementioned HFR across West Hampstead. My advice would be to look into the options available across the different cinemas and price points before booking. As always, do tweet me your thoughts @NxNW6.

Film of the Week

The Baron
(2010, horror, 105 mins, 18, subtitles)
Showing as part of the UK Portuguese Film Festival, The Baron is a horror remake of a film made during WWII and forbidden by the dictatorship in Portugal. The screening includes a director Q&A with Edgar Pera. This looks great!
The Tricycle, Saturday 8th, 20.30 £9.50.

One-off screenings
The Nutcracker: Live from the Royal Opera House Finchley Road Vue, Thu 13th, 195 mins, 19:15 £15

Regular programme
Hampstead Film Society
Hampstead Town Hall – 213 Haverstock Hill, £7
Marius (1931, comedy, 130 mins, subtitles) Tue 27th 7pm. Hampstead Town Hall.
Alexander Korda film from the early '30s that sees a host of characters play out their lives around a Marseilles port.

The Tricycle Cinema
(£9.50 adult, £8.50 concessions, Mon £6 adult, £4.50 Brent resident).
Great Expectations (2012, 128 mins, drama, 12A)
Adapted by David Nicholls, directed by Mike Newell and starring Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Feinnes – on paper this has everything going for it. However, the word of mouth has unfortunately been mediocre at best.
Sightseers (2012, 88 mins, comedy, 15)
Ben Wheatley is fast becoming the most talked about British director around. Sightseers is his third film and in my opinion, his best. Nuts in May meets Bonnie & Clyde - the funniest British film I have seen all year.

The Everyman Cinemas
Prices vary, but expect to pay ~£13 (~£10 for a concession). Booking advised.
Belsize Park
Great Expectations
Argo

Still the best popcorn film available locally. Well worth seeing on the big screen if you can make it.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D* (from Thu 13 only, more next week).
Both Great Expectations and Argo have no scheduled screenings for Thu 13.

Hampstead
Seven Psychopaths* (2012, crime comedy, 110 mins, 15)
The follow up to modern classic In Bruges sees a struggling screenwriter become entangled in the LA underworld. The cast includes Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell. I found it to be deriative of Quentin Tarantino's films, and Charlie Kaufman's writing, misogynistic and ultimately a disappointment.
The Hunt (2012, drama, 115 mins, 15, subtitled)
Danish drama that saw Mads Mikkelsen pick up the Best Actor award at Cannes for his portayal of a schoolteacher whose life is ruined by an innocent lie. Recommended for people who enjoy challenging cinema. Limited screenings.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012, romantic comedy, 122 mins, 15).
Ignore the terrible marketing campaign and the confusing title – this is being talked up very seriously as the rom-com of the year. Don't be surprised if it picks up Oscar nominations across the board, not least for Jennifer Lawrence's performance. Perfect date movie material.

Maida Vale
Skyfall (2012, action, 143 mins, 12A)
Now officially the most successful film of all time at the UK box office. Great to see it back at the Everyman for a limited time in the run up to Christmas.
Great Expectations
Silver Linings Playbook
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D
* (from Thu 13 only, more next week).
Both Great Expectations and Skyfall have no scheduled screenings for Thu 13.
